Jorge Drexler
Among the most interesting projects shown the first day of the Billboard Latin Music Conference was the one presented by singer Jorge Drexler, who surprisingly has combined his music with an app that allows the user a range of experiences that go way beyond just listening to a favorite artist.During the panel entitled Liquid Song, Drexler explained the whole creative process behind his interactive application N and its sequels N2 and N3.The apps provide interactive songs that can be downloaded so users can create, save and share however many combinations they can imagine of tunes and lyrics performed individually by Drexler, guest vocalists and a symphony orchestra.Responding to the digital trend, Drexler said, we decided to create a new song format with these applications. These songs dont have one solid form he said, their principal meaning comes from the interaction. The version that I can make of these songs isnt better than the versions that you can make. The apps, which have had more than 150,000 downloads and are available both in English and Spanish, let the user play at being a composer or music producer, orchestra director or editor, through a system of chance that means no final recorded version will be the same as that of any other user. With N, Drexler said, the song isnt finished by the composer or the artist its the user who completes it, and who then has the possibility of saving it and sharing it over social networks. The apps latest version, N3, includes 10 guest artists, and the user can pick which one will sing each part of the song. With these apps we have transformed songs into experiences. Its something new and very complex. Its like inventing a whole new genre Drexler said.
