Univision Digital announced that Alberto Cairo, one of the world’s foremost authorities in the field of information graphics, will begin collaborating with Univision as its first visualization innovator-in-residence. Cairo is the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the School of Communication of the University of Miami (UM) and the director of the Visualization program at UM’s Center for Computational Science. He will spend one day a week in Univision’s newsroom using this experience for a research project on how data journalism, visualization and infographics have evolved during the last two decades. This project, titled Nerd Journalism: News Graphics and the Rise of the Journalist-Engineer, will be released in the form of a book and a website at the beginning of 2017. Cairo will act as an internal consultant, bringing his expertise in infographics, visual communication and statistics to the Univision newsroom to help establish guidelines and strategy for visual information content across all digital platforms. He will work directly with Mariano Zafra, head of the infographics team in the creation and implementation of highly effective visual tools. “It is an honor to have Alberto on the Univision News and Digital team. His guidance and expertise in our newsroom allows us to continue UCI’s aggressive digital expansion and will help us achieve a level of excellence and clarity in our visual data storytelling on every platform”, said Isaac Lee, Chief News and Digital Officer for Univision Communications Inc. and CEO of Fusion.
