A few weeks before the series El Rey, Vicente Fernández premieres in Mexico and the world, Dago García, VP of Production and Content, Caracol TV, said that this experience marks the beginning of a new stage for the Colombian network. “This It is part of a plan that Caracol set up at least 12 years ago, and is to become a top of the line producer and gradually allow us to be the first Spanish-speaking content generator in the world.”

With El Rey, Vicente Fernández, Caracol accomplished its objective of making television in other territories for the global market. The series was recorded in Mexico and the US and had a production team from both countries.

The series premiered on August 3 only in Colombia, where it has become one of the viewers’ favorites.

For García the ingredients that allowed the success of El Rey, Vicente Fernández in Colombia, are also the values by which he believes that the production will do well in the world.

“First of all, the story, because it is an intense and epic story about a person who, despite many obstacles, can reach the top. We have a first class cast, starring Jaime Camil, the level of acting is very good and it is one of the things that I highlight the most. Beside that, there is what was achieved regarding production. We visited almost 300 locations in the US and Mexico. The soundtrack is also top of the line. We recorded more than 250 songs that blended in an organic way in the series, because Vicente’s own story forced us to do so,” assured the director, who added that for building the story they had several work sessions in a three years period where Vicente Fernández himself told them his story.

He highlighted other production values: “We use special effects technology to reproduce certain scenarios and generate massive audiences, because it is very difficult to gather real people, but we combine both. In two or three shows in big theaters we managed to fit in over 2000 flesh and blood extras and it worked well too. The product has many elements to make it work on a global level. The work was done and expectations are high.”

Many lessons have been learned from all this experience. “There is a lesson in terms of a certain difference that can exist between what is content for open TV and narratives for streaming television. The narratives do not always concur. It is easier that the narrative for broadcast television adapts to streaming television. It is one of the discoveries we made and that we will be implementing for future projects.”

García and other executives of Caracol will attend the launching event of El Rey, Vicente Fernández in Mexico next Tuesday the 13th. Of course, it will also be an opportunity to close deals with projects in the near future. “We are already in talks to do more productions in Mexico. There are good prospects. I believe that Vicente is going to put us in a good position to reach our goals”.
