OTT services are gaining more purchasing power and sports OTT services are increasingly competing for premium sports rights, was one of the conclusions of the presentation made by Alexios Dimitropoulos, senior analyst at Ampere Analysis, prior to the session dedicated to growth and monetization on the first day of the StreamTV Sports Summit.

Dimitropoulos mentioned another key point: in the US, TV networks add premium sports content to their subscription OTT offerings to target ever-evolving young audiences and reach consumers who are turning away from linear TV.

They also concluded that COVID-19 has impacted the willingness of consumers in the US to pay for indigenous sports such as American football, baseball and, ice hockey, while younger audiences favor the consumption of international soccer leagues.

“As OTT viewing continues to rise and linear TV continues to decline, digital rights will be crucial in keeping young audiences hooked,” Dimitropoulos concluded in his analysis.
