Pasiones is nearing 9.5 million subscribers between U.S. Hispanic (3 million), and Latin America (6.3 million). Colombia is its main market with a thriving telenovela industry. “Many say that Colombia is already saturated with novelas, but in fact it is a market with high demand, and the existing pay-TV channels carry mostly Mexican novelas from a single producer,” said Fernanda Merodio, senior director of Affiliates Sales and Marketing of Imagina US.Pasiones, in contrast, features telenovelas from large producers in the region, such as Globo of Brazil and Colombia’s Caracol, along with products from Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, etc. It also features a daily block of Asian novelas in HD. “It started out as an experiment and it has performed extremely well,” added Merodio. For Pasiones, the priority is programming in HD. That’s why the most recent productions (most of the programming), are produced in that format. Nonetheless, the channel also features classic novelas with historical value that were produced in SD, such as the first version of El clón and the legendary Venezuelan story La dama de rosa. “We’ve improved our content; we’ve worked hard and invested a lot on this,” she added. The goal of the channel is to penetrate markets, especially Peru, Chile and Argentina. In Latin America, Pasiones works with distribution agents Sabrina Capurro (Southern cone), MIC (Peru and Bolivia), and MBA (rest of the continent).
