Sony Pictures International Productions acquired global cinema exhibition rights to the film ¡Qué Viva México! by Mexican director Luis Estrada

Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) announced the acquisition of the rights to exhibit in cinemas worldwide the political satire by Mexican filmmaker Luis Estrada, ¡Qué Viva México!

The film will be released on more than 3,000 screens throughout Mexico on March 23 by Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Last November, Netflix announced that it had reverted the rights to the film, which was originally scheduled to premiere on the platform on November 16. Previously it was meant to be shown only on some selected screens for a few days. But its director and producer Luis Estrada changed the distribution terms – demanding more time in theaters – with which the platform did not agree.

The film was one of the highlights of Netflix’s Que México Se Vea campaign, which sought to spotlight the value of Mexican cinema.

“¡Qué Viva México! is an acid social fable and a poisonous political satire; grotesque with a lot of black humor that, like a soulless mirror, shows and portrays us all in these times of polarization and intolerance, but not in a realistic or naturalistic, but with the distortion that parody, farce, magical realism and caricature give. All framed in that little personal hell to which we all belong and that we all, for better or worse, have and suffer: The Family,” said director Luis Estrada.

Directed and produced by Luis Estrada (La Ley de Herodes, El Infierno, La dictadura perfecta) and with a story and script by Estrada and Jaime Sampietro (El Infierno), the film stars Damián Alcázar (El Infierno, La Ley de Herodes, Acapulco), Alfonso Herrera (La Dictadura Perfecta, Ozark), Joaquín Cosío (El Infierno, Escuadrón Suicida), Ana de la Reguera (El Ejército de los Muertos), Ana Martín (El Pecado de Oyuki) and Angelina Peláez (Presencias).
