Ramsés Albiñana from Milagro Films: I always had the idea of being a director in my head

Ramses Albinana

The Spanish director Ramsés Albiñana comes from a family devoted to cinema and audiovisual production. Despite having studied business administration, in the last year of the career, he opened his own production company, Albiñana Films. Since 1995 he has shot commercials and fiction for different markets. His work has been recognized in multiple festivals such as FIAP, Cannes, Sun Festival in San Sebastian, and Gunn Report, among others. He is currently part of the the Milagro Films family in the US Hispanic market.

When did you decide you would be a director?

The truth is that I always had the idea of being a director in my head. Luckily, this was something present in my home every day, since I came from a family that was dedicated to this art. I could see how fun and interesting it was to live with that. It was easy for me to see the pros and cons.

With all your experience, what keeps you excited about arriving at a set?

More than excitement, it is like tickling in my stomach, because you’ve been preparing that moment for a long time, and it is the moment of truth: if you’ve chosen a good location, an actor, etc… everything is important in the set, and you’re the one who’s asked them for those things. For me, the relation with the team is also very nice, whether you already know each other or not. And that is amazing, it is another type of interesting feeling. and the last one I realize is that I can do what I like, shoot to explain stories, everything that goes on before and after shooting is preparing and finishing that great moment that is shooting.

Do you have any fiction or documentary project under way?

The truth is that I am not a big fan of documentaries. I do like to watch them, but I don’t know if I would like to prepare and shoot one. Fiction, however, does seem very interesting to me, it is something I have been doing gradually for a long time because I think it is very different from advertising. The number of formats that are currently being used for brands has helped me a great deal, since doing just a 30” isn’t used anymore, and having other formats helps to make longer stories.

How has your visual style evolved?

My style has gradually evolved with the trends that more or less carry us all. Being able to find more information easily helps us see many things and that helps you think of a style for each project. Because of the way I am, I think I adapt to each project I am involved in, but from the outside, unintentionally, people label you in one style or another.

What clients have you worked with recently?

Yesterday I was shooting for the Guggenheim Museum a small, personal project, I was truly looking forward to, on an exhibit of Giacometti’s works (Swiss, mid-1900’s artist), which I shot with Albiñana Films, and the previous one was a project for Spectrum we shot in Miami with Milagro Films.

Where is Ramsés Albiñana heading?

I would personally like to continue doing what I have done these years as a director, but I think more and more about looking for a couple of young directors with a lot of talent and eagerness, mainly eagerness, so that I can shape them to get to be good directors, and be able to produce hand in hand with them, and help them in everything, based upon the experience I have had these years.
