Roberto Aguilera from Shooters Films: Aesthetics and elegance are essential for me

19 de septiembre de 2016

Mexican director, Roberto Aguilera, has had a vast career with multiple facets and artistic interests. He retired from commercial production and direction a couple of years ago, but returned with renewed energy to work on the Shooters Films team.

Since he was a child, Aguilera was involved with painting, scale modeling, acting and music. When he was barely 9 years old, he saw the film Star Wars and his life changed. At 16 he came in contact with cinema, when he was hired by the production company OMNI to do storyboards. Since then he held different positions in the film industry. In the year 2000, he had his debut as Director of commercials and has directed fiction, advertising and has been distinguished as an actor as well.

“I like art in general very much. I like commercials with a concept. I enjoy both serious content; and comedy, aesthetics and elegance are essential for me" he said. "I come from a traditional school. I entered this field because of the passion I feel for cinema."

Aguilera confessed that he loves advertising, but he thinks it's sad that it is so square. "Nobody wants to take risks. I think if art were the highest value for society, things would be entirely different." The Filmmaker hopes to find more artistic projects together with Shooters.

His main influence is George Lucas "because he is the man who changed the world. Star Wars was the film that changed everything, it is 40 years old and look at where it stands today. Nobody else has achieved this, it is amazing, both regarding the story as well as the form." Blade Runner is another of the films that has marked him as a Filmmaker.

Among his clients are: Toyota, Honda, Jeep, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Danone. "I would love to work with a client that tells me, 'let's make amazing content' and who would bet on a Director that went a bit further."

Throughout his career, he has obtained multiple recognitions. One of the most important was the one he received from the Mexican senate together with the consecrated Directors Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro González Iñarritu and Guillermo Cuarón; for the international success of his short film 9 y 20. The Filmmaker is also renown internationally for his scale models.

For Aguilera, Hispanics have traced an important path in the advertising industry in the U.S., thanks to their efforts and achievements.
