Amalgama by Mexican director Carlos Cuarón and distributed by Spanglish Movies debuts in US theaters on April 15

Amalgama, the third film by Mexican director Carlos Cuarón, a Mexican-Dominican co-production distributed by Spanglish Movies, opens in theaters in the US on April 15. It was produced by Besos Cósmicos, Lokal 3 Productions, and 11:11 Films & TV.

“I feel very satisfied with the film, not only because of the difficulty and the time involved but also because of the results. It is a high-quality film, with spectacular photography, very special music, vocal, very different, and also because it is a story about dentists, which comes out of the mouth,” Cuarón commented.

“We are delighted to bring Amalgama to the American public. The film is brilliantly directed by Carlos Cuarón and has an exceptional cast. It is truly a visual feast that we hope that all the American public will enjoy,” said Gustavo R. Aparicio, general director of Spanglish Movies, LLC.

Cuarón’s son Mateo contributed to two of the songs on the soundtrack, Inland and A Ponernos de Buena. The entire soundtrack is now available on audio platforms such as Spotify.

Amalgama premiered in December 2021 in Mexico and will also be on Netflix LatAm and Pantaya USA, after its theatrical release.

The film, a dramatic comedy, focuses on four dentists, three men, and one woman, who meet at a congress in the Riviera Maya. They are all trying to escape from their own painful stories and spend together a crazy weekend filled with jealousy, envy, and excesses on a tiny island in the Mexican Caribbean that will impact their lives forever.

Cuarón was not only the director but also the writer along with Luis Usabiaga. The cast includes Manolo Cardona (who also joined as a producer with his company 11:11 Films & TV), Miguel Rodarte, Tony Dalton, Stephanie Cayo, and the special performance of Francis Cruz and Alejandro Calva.

Amalgama debuted at the Morelia Festival in December 2020, then went to the Trieste Ibero-American Festival where it won Best Screenplay and received the award for best soundtrack at the Miami International Film Festival. It also was presented at the Malaga Festival.

The pre-production of Amalgama began in September 2019. It was filmed between November and December of that year in Quintana Ro, located in the south of Tulum (Mexico)) and in Las Terrenas, a town on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic. It also includes scenes in the Pinewood studios where they have a tank of water. Editing was completed prior to the pandemic and post-production, sound, and color correction took place during the pandemic.

Cuarón’s first two films were Rudo y Cursi and Besos de Azúcar. Currently, he is developing several projects related to TV series and movies for cinema.
