Gato Grande Productions: For big production companies it is more strategic to try not to cover many genres but instead find their niche

Carla González, Development director at Gato Grande Productions and executive producer of Luis Miguel, la Serie, was on #VisitaPRODU, where she spoke about the success of this production.

González, who is also a writer and director, pointed out that they knew they had something good in their hands because they worked to fulfill international standards; they were not merely competing with national TV stations but at a global scale.

Netflix acquired it as a license, but the series is from Gato Grande, and for Telemundo they had to make several adaptations (it isn´t the same product for both) due to issues regarding open television restrictions.

Likewise, she said there is a production company boom similar to the phenomenon that occurred when internet platforms appeared, and that many of them will no longer be on the market. According to her, the secret for survival, and to be able to reach platforms such as Netflix, is to specialize. “It is more strategic to not try to cover too many genres but instead find your niche.

On the other hand, she pointed out that it is necessary to look for contents that travel well in different countries. “For us, in creative terms, that is the challenge, to generate content that travels well across different cultures,” and added that the work of platforms is to have a complete and broad catalog.

According to González, melodrama is a genre that will never die. “What is changing is the quality of scripts and the quality stories are told in,” as well as “to say more in less time, in which the plot unfolds faster.”
