Luis Fernández: "As the leading Spanish-language TV network, Telemundo reaches U.S. Latinos across more screens, platforms, and communities than any other media company"
Luis Fernández, Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, has written directly to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, urging him to reconsider and stressing that Telemundo’s content is a vital link and a trusted resource for Latino viewers across the country.
“YouTube customers could lose the ability to watch Telemundo starting Tuesday the 30th if Google removes all Spanish-language broadcast TV content from YouTube TV’s core programming package. This decision would leave millions of Hispanic viewers without access to the news, sports, and entertainment they rely on every day,” Fernández said in his letter.
He added that “Telemundo is not just a network. It is a lifeline for millions of Spanish speakers across the U.S., serving the fastest-growing demographic groups in many communities nationwide. As the leading Spanish-language TV network, Telemundo reaches U.S. Latinos across more screens, platforms, and communities than any other media company. We are the #1 Spanish-language network in primetime programming, home to the four most-watched reality shows on Spanish-language TV, and the exclusive Spanish-language home of the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.”
He pointed out that Telemundo is “a vital and trusted source of news. Noticias Telemundo with Julio Vaqueiro ranks among the top 10 most-watched programs on Spanish-language TV, providing critical information in Spanish during elections, potentially life-saving weather alerts and other emergency events, as well as during the most important moments.”
In the letter, he emphasized that despite all this, “Google and YouTube TV are abusing their market power by refusing to reach a fair agreement, attempting to ‘make an example’ out of us. In the process, they could deny millions of viewers access to the news, sports, and entertainment they depend on. Your subscribers and our audience deserve better. We urge you to reconsider. Do the right thing. Keep Telemundo on YouTube TV,” Fernández concluded.
NBCUniversal has begun notifying YouTube TV customers that, if a renewal agreement is not reached, they may lose access to NBCU’s portfolio of Spanish-language content from Telemundo, as well as popular entertainment and sports programming, including Sunday Night Football, NBA, Big Ten Football, WWE, Premier League, The Voice, The Real Housewives, and much more.

“Google, with its US$3 trillion market cap, already controls what Americans see online through search and ads—now it wants to control what we watch. YouTube TV has refused the best rates and terms in the market, demanding preferential treatment and seeking an unfair advantage over competitors to dominate the video marketplace—all under the false pretense of fighting for the consumer. The result: YouTube TV customers could lose access to NBCUniversal’s premium programming, including Sunday Night Football, NBA, Big Ten Football, WWE, Premier League, Saturday Night Live, The Voice, The Real Housewives, and much more,” said an NBCUniversal spokesperson.
