The Walt Disney Company will be launching a cheaper, ad-supported version of its Disney+ streaming service in the US by the end of 2022 as part of its plan to attract more subscribers. By 2023, this new service will be released internationally.

Disney will leverage on the revenues generated by the increase of subscribers thanks to this ad-supported version in order to invest on the production of content. Likewise, it will support its goal to reach 230 million to 240 million subscribers on Disney+ by 2024. Also as part of its strategy to increase subscribers is including live events, such as the last Oscar Awards in the US.

“Expanding Disney+ access to a broader audience for a lower price is a win for everyone: consumers, advertisers and our storytellers,” said Kareem Daniel, president of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. “More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience and our storytellers will be able to share their amazing work with more fans and families.”

The company had already been working with an ad-supported Hulu service, also with other streaming services following this trend of a cheaper ad-supported option such as HBO Max, Peacock, Discovery+, Paramount+. The company will introduce the new ad-supported Disney+ to advertisers in May.

“Since its launch, advertisers have been crying out for the opportunity to be a part of Disney+ and not just because there is a growing demand for more streaming inventory,” added Rita Ferro, President of Advertising for Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. “Disney+ with advertising will offer marketers the most premium streaming environment with our most beloved brands, Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and National Geographic. I can’t wait for our Upfront to share more with advertisers.”

The announcement of a specific release date and cost information is expected to be soon.
