Pamela Grossman of Getty Images: 2016 visual trends will be a study in extremes

Pamela Grossman, Director of Visual Trends at Getty Images explained the six visual trends that will define 2016. After a study that analyzed customer buying trends, advertising, entertainment, social media and around 2.35 billion searches and 400 million downloads from the Getty Images’ web site, they identified these big trends. This year is set to revel in visual extremes: the contrast of the quiet and the loud, the peaceful and the visceral. This years visual trends will be a study in extremes Grossman said. “Today, imagery is a universal language. Consumers are communicating with pictures before they ever type a word, and often in lieu of words at all” she explained. “The exponential growth of smart technology has revolutionized the world of photography. Visual content is driving emotional engagement and self-expression like never before.” The six imagery trends according to Grossman are: Outsider In, which is a celebration of rebelliousness; Extended Human, that humanizes technology as a way to get closer to the world; Divine Living, a combination of spiritual life with consumption; Messthetics, is a departure from the hyper-perfect, digitally manipulated images and looks for the dirty and messy; Silence vs. Noise, its a trend that as a counterpoint to messy, consists of images which have a small, bold element amongst an expanse of space; and Surreality, which uses new photo manipulation techniques to create playful and often surreal imagery.
