Hernán Churba has been capturing the world in images since he was 15. He was born in Buenos Aires and decided to study advertising in the University of Belgrano. He is currently working as a Photographer and Director.

In September 1998 he inaugurated his first photo studio in Buenos Aires, where he began to work for the biggest advertising agencies in the country, for local and multinational clients.

Since then, he knew that telling stories was his passion. “Photography or cinema are marvelous resources to do it and give us the possibility of achieving this goal with our vision” he said. “When the time comes to make photos of my projects, the work required behind the pictures themselves is the same as in directing, because that is precisely what gives personality to the stories, your direction, regardless of the resource or format you use.”

In 2002, he started making his first productions for foreign countries. “Mexico is undoubtedly my second city after Buenos Aires. I traveled there for the first time in 2002 and I was very well received, both professionally and personally. I had a lot of work and I made a lot of friends. Working so much in a place helps you understand its cultural peculiarities and when you have to tell stories, that makes things a lot easier” he narrated.

Churba has had the opportunity to work for the Hispanic market as a photographer on several occasions. “Print is not the strongest thing in this market, that is not where people´s energy or budget is and that has made it very difficult to work fluently, because I have always lived in Buenos Aires” he explained.

Many of his photographic pieces have been awarded in several local and international advertising festivals such as Cannes Lions, Clio Awards, One Show, Circulo de Creativos, San Sebastián, among others.

Parallel to his career as a Photographer, he began to direct in 2014. Since then, he films both advertising and his personal projects, that are centered around social topics from an artistic perspective. “I wouldn´t call it a leap, I see it as a complement that I had been wanting to do for a long time. When conditions, circumstances and the moment were favorable I began. Internal crisis can be triggers and are the ideal moments to discover opportunities” he confessed.

He likes humor very much, but in his work there is a strong interest in topics that have a social backdrop, appealing to sensitivity and emotions”. From the artist’s position, my interest is to express myself with the tools I handle. I always try to transmit, to reach whoever sees it, using emotion in all its hues. I enjoy working both with professional actors I can direct towards where I need them to get, as well as with people who have their own stories in real contexts, and where I can give the story my own personality” explained the Filmmaker. Despite this, Churba feels reality always exceeds fiction. “It’s a matter of observing, assimilating and then expressing”.

Recently, Churba shot two projects he enjoyed a lot: One for McCan México with Non Violence and another for Y&R México with a project for Special Olympics. “I just published a personal online project which I have been producing for 6 years and enjoyed making very much, called Emociones. It is purely expressive work, with first rate professional actors, leading them to extreme expressions”.
