Kevin Speight
Kevin Speight is a Spanish-Irish director, who was born in Madrid. From a young age he felt attracted by art and cinema, so he studied photography, art history, editing and postproduction. He grew up in the world of cinema and commercials working with different crews, where he learned from great filmmakers. He has worked for brands such as Volkswagen, Cadillac, Coca-Cola, Nike and Orange. He is currently part of the Shooters Films family.
Q: When did you decide to start directing?
KS: Starting to direct somehow means losing respect for that word and making a commitment to oneself. I began doing still photos, where I was always very attracted to the “built photo” of Jeff Wall, Cindy Sherman or David LaChappele. I always aimed in my photos for a narrative, a sensation and temporary tension. So the step of handling 24 frames per second began naturally from this starting point.
Q: In which projects are you currently working on? Are you working on any fiction or documentary?
KS: I always try to have projects developing, it is an almost vital necessity. Right now I am finishing a series of photos called Ingrávidos that I will showcase in Spain, Mexico and Puerto Rico. I’m also finishing editing a short fiction film and I have another ongoing one for next year, while I continue working at the same time with advertising. The feature film will come later, there is no hurry.
Q: How would you define your visual style?
KS: I really like to develop a strong and iconic visual narrative in my work through the camera and the actors. I believe a lot in aesthetic coherence. Aesthetics has a use, a meaning and an emotional power that helps us reinforce a story or concept and, for me, this aesthetic search is present in the projects from the beginning, in the locations, the art, the costumes, the language of camera, editing, rhythm …
Q: How has been the experience with Shooters Films?
KS: In Shooters you can breathe an incredible good vibes. It is a wonderful team with whom I have felt very loved and supported since the beginning. The feeling of being part of a family is something very important in our profession.
Q: Is there a book, record, picture … that has been with you in your career?
KS: I love these types of questions, so I take this opportunity to recommend an exciting and interesting book for both directors and artists in general: “A Director prepares, seven Essays on Art and Theater” by Anne Bogart.
An inspiring painting … the first one that comes to my mind is “The origin of the world” of (Gustave) Courbet.
Q: Where is Kevin Speight heading?
KS: The truth is I have no clue … hahahaha. I would like to always be nurturing from cinema, advertising, artistic photography and continue exploring new languages, new paths as well as developing those that are already open. And my intention of course is never to stop doing thing here … now … from now on.
