Yasmina Solanes
After her degree in Art History in Barcelona, she entered different agencies in London such as Saatchi & Saatchi and Springer & Jacoby UK to get closer to the advertising world. But very soon she realized that her place was behind the camera. She enrolled at The London Film School to obtain an MA in filmmaking. In her days as a Londoner student, she had the chance to shoot short films both as director and Dop. Also, at The London Film School she fed her eyes and soul learning from directors such as Mike Leigh, Patrice Leconte, and Mike Figgis among others.
Yasmina’s graduation short film “3 washes” won several prizes at International Film festivals. Upon her return to Spain, now 10 years ago, she went on to directing TV commercials for international clients such as Movistar, SEAT, Mango, Fanta, Garnier, Dove, L’Oréal, Vodafone, Huawei.
Q: What is your first memory with a camera?
YS: My first memory with a camera is when I was a small kid. I loved to film small homemade shorts with my brother and my friends. We invented stories and then recorded them. I do not think they were very good, but we had a great time.
Q: How do you define your visual style?
YS: I would say that my style is intimate, but at the same time it can be energetic, emotional and cinematographic. I have always been fascinated by exploring the human condition and, as a consequence, telling stories.
Q: With which clients have you worked with recently?
YS: I have recently worked for Garnier, Nivea, Huawei … For example, I have several times with Huawei this year. It is always fun to go back to work for the same client who trusts you.
Q: Do you have a fiction or documentary project in progress?
YS: When I started working on documentaries and I enjoyed them a lot, but to this day I think it would be very difficult for me to combine them with advertising since lately, I’m continuously working. As for fiction I always have saved some small stories that I’m willing to tell.
