Atresmedia and Disney+ have signed a pioneering agreement in the Spanish market, allowing them to expand both their audience and their content catalog.
Starting in September, Disney+ subscribers will have access to a specially curated collection of Atresmedia titles through the atresplayer label. This includes more than 300 annual hours of content produced in Spain, which will be regularly updated, within a dedicated atresplayer space on Disney+.
“This pioneering and historic agreement with Disney+, one of the largest international streaming platforms, consolidates the leadership of Atresmedia and atresplayer, reaffirming the success of our innovative content exploitation strategy. It allows us to expand the reach of our productions, promoting Spanish talent and culture,” said Javier Bardají, CEO of Atresmedia.
Bardají added: “This commitment has been part of our model and philosophy for decades, and it has enabled us to achieve international successes such as Gran Hotel, Money Heist, Velvet, The Time in Between, Locked Up, Veneno, Alba, or Entre Tierras, which have made an impact and opened the way for the rest of the industry. That’s why this alliance also strengthens Atresmedia as a driving force and reference point for our industry and confirms atresplayer as Spain’s leading platform and local hero, with a track record of continuous growth.”
The agreement grants Disney+ co-exclusive rights to a wide range of Atresmedia productions.
Starting this September, Disney+ will offer atresplayer originals such as Mar Afuera (premiering September 14); top-rated entertainment shows like The Voice or Your Face Sounds Familiar; and Antena 3 series such as La Encrucijada or Sueños de Libertad. It will also feature a selection of series from Atresmedia’s catalog, including Locked Up, Physics or Chemistry, and No One Could Live Here.
“Atresmedia offers high-quality local content, and adding hundreds of hours of this content to stream on Disney+ is great news for our customers in Spain. This agreement reflects our commitment to supporting local broadcasters across Europe, including our recent deal in the United Kingdom with ITVX. This alliance aligns with our goal of delivering a wide variety of quality, culturally relevant stories to our subscribers, complementing our own catalog that continues to grow with Disney+ originals produced in Spain, such as the recent hit Thieves: The Tiara of Saint Águeda or the upcoming La Suerte: A Series of Coincidences, which will premiere at the upcoming San Sebastián International Film Festival, along with globally recognized movies and series such as Lilo & Stitch and FX’s The Bear,” said Karl Holmes, Managing Director of Disney+ for EMEA.
