Attorney Aníbal Romero, with more than 20 years of experience, is the creator, executive producer, and star of the microdrama series Un Abogado en NY, a 100% independent production currently on YouTube and now in its second season.
“For the second season, we decided to take things to a higher level. We’re working with renowned casting director Carla Hool, who has cast many TV series and films, such as Emilia Pérez and Narcos. She’s now working with me on casting Hollywood actors. Nowadays, you don’t need a mega Hollywood studio. We know there are high-quality cameras and very talented people who haven’t yet been discovered. I live in New York City — just imagine the number of locations we can use. It’s a completely independent production, but I go back to this point: now anyone can do it. Before, we thought something like this could only be done in Hollywood, but today you can do it with a phone,” Romero told PRODU.
Romero said that from a sincere idea, “an excellent opportunity” emerged, and added that they are open to moving to another platform. “But the important thing is that we don’t depend on anyone, because clearly the people who watch me see me as the lawyer, as the actor, but it’s also a character you can hire to help you with your cases.”
He explained that Un Abogado en Nueva York presents stories he has experienced throughout his 20-year career “and that I somehow wanted to put on paper.” He added: “I’m now working with an excellent Argentine playwright named Emiliano Dionisi, who is currently very successful in theaters in Buenos Aires. My team is gradually growing, and we’ll see what the future brings.”
He noted that a production like theirs “can perhaps help change the way many people think — those who simply believe that if you’re from another country, you’re a criminal, which is not true. I think the message is very positive because many people can learn from this series about the reality of the U.S. immigration system, and it comes from someone with experience as an immigration lawyer. I’m not making things up.”
He said that YouTube is currently the most well-known platform in the world. “That’s also interesting — we’re not only reaching the American market but all of Latin America. And with YouTube’s automatic dubbing system, people are watching us in Turkey, in China. We can be seen everywhere.”
Romero mentioned that the first episode of the first season of Un Abogado en Nueva York reached around 8 million people, and the first episode of the second season reached half a million views in one week between YouTube and Facebook.
This second season will take about a year to complete. “We’re taking a bit more time because we wanted to raise the acting level,” he said.
