Alejo Restrepo from HERO Films: I try to include narration and a film style in all the ads I make

Restrepo: Lo que me trajo a México fue una bonita coincidencia

Young Colombian Director, Alejo Restrepo, recently joined HERO Films in Mexico and they have just filmed their first project together: a spot for McDonald’s with the Chiat/TBWA agency. The Director shared that he is very happy with the final product.”We shot with Alfonso Aguilar as Photography Director and everything went smoothly. The main challenge was to place a McDonald’s restaurant in the middle of nowhere. We had to erase all the backgrounds, using chrome” he explained. “Something I truly appreciate about this ad is that we are breaking the classical approach to selling hamburgers.” The filmmaker thinks that in order to avoid adblocking, it is necessary to make advertising that is more fun and entertaining, things creatives themselves would like to see. Restrepo studied in London and directed for some time in Europe and Los Angeles. He was nominated in Cannes as Young Director and from there came the alliance with HERO. “I met Andrés Herrán almost accidentally in Cannes and we got along very well” he told PRODU. “I was looking for representation and good people, more than great enterprises that don’t always offer you that, I preferred good people. What brought me to Mexico was a pretty coincidence.”In the future he wants to make films, “that is why I try to include narration and a film style in all the ads I make, for the characters to be well developed, and for the ad to have a film style. I am more cinematic than conceptual” he added. He is represented in England by Generator, in France by Voir and in Spain by Wonder. He is currently looking for representation in the U.S. Hispanic market.
