The Sundance Institute announced this week that it will use $ 1 million in new funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to bring artistic development of eight US cities in the next three years. The program searches for a wide range of recognized filmmakers, writers, producers and composers to offer workshops in residence laboratories of the Sundance Institute. The new funding follows a pilot project run in Miami and Philadelphia last year, where hundreds of filmmakers were involved. The first lab started the series in Miami on Saturday October, 25th at O Cinema Wynwood.”Miami is a hotbed of independent film right now,” Dennis Scholl, VP of Arts from the Knight Foundation, said. “We are a very vibrant independent film community in Miami, and when I started to look at that, I was thrilled. When I started to look at the other cities, I found an interesting and thriving film culture in each of them.” The 24 labs give people the opportunity to hear about what it takes to make a short film, to be a writer, and how to make a documentary, among other topics. Additionally, Sundance promises to select 12 filmmakers of these cities to be named at the Sundance Knight Fellows and participate in special screenings, panels and professional development opportunities at the annual Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
