Antonio Urrutia, born in Guadalajara, Mexico, got his start in directing with the short film De Tripas, Corazon, which not only won him some prizes, including an award from the Mexican Academy (Ariel), but also a nomination for an Oscar for Best Short Film in 1997.The day that Gael Garcia debuted as a filmmaker was the same day Urrutia got his start with De Tripas, Corazon. “We were both scared to death. We sat down and confessed it” the director said.His second short, Sin Sosten, was nominated for the Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998 and won several other international prizes.Urrutia told PRODU that his favorite film director is Alexander Payne, who inspires him “with the humanity of his stories and his characters”: In 2002 he directed his first feature film, Asesino en Serio. The movie was acclaimed by critics and was a box-office blockbuster in Spain, Mexico and all Latin America.He began directing commercials in 2000, and among his most successful are Cardiologos, which won silver at FIAP 2000; Ovejas, the most powerful and remembered Coca-Cola spot of 2001 in Latin America; and Señoras Mayores, also for Coke, which was on the BBC London list of the Worlds 25 Best Commercials in 2002. His successful career in movies, television and advertising also includes the short produced by TV Azteca, Verdad Que No Fue Mi Culpa?, which did the rounds of many international festivals and premiered during Mexicos bicentennial celebrations in 2010.The director dedicates his projects to his son Bruno, who wants to make a photographic documentary of a motorcycle trip through South America as part of his professional future.Antonio Urrutia currently spends most of his time in advertising.
