My first piece of advice is to dare to be authentic. Each person brings a unique background that allows us to contribute with our life experiences, knowledge, ideas, diverse roots, and dreams about our industry. Companies need that diversity of ideas to grow and compete, and sometimes we are afraid to show our value. We have to be proud of ourselves and find our voice. I also always recommend being open to learning something new every day and being aware that we are transforming, always evolving, and we must continue to do so by means of technologies, trends, and public preferences.
In recent years we have created awareness among our male colleagues about the reality of sexual harassment, abuse of power, and the few numbers of women in executive roles in our industry. This has helped women to continue growing and competing from a balanced and equitable point of view every day.
My biggest challenge has been proving myself every time I’ve taken a step forward. The scrutiny of men is strong and you have to work harder and constantly show what you are capable of. What’s considered an attribute in a man, it’s seen as a weakness in a woman. Raising a family, having a more balanced life and trying to create new content, differentiating businesses, and developing innovative strategies has been an uphill struggle, but it is worth the effort.
Every day there are more groups supporting women in our industry. But it is necessary for men in positions of power to give us even more opportunities and for women to continue demonstrating that they are capable of leading and undertaking. It is important to seek mentors and create internal support systems that allow the best talent (of any gender, race, lifestyle, etc.) to shine and compete in a fair and healthy way for opportunities to grow.
