América Móvil and ESPN announced an agreement for rights to the 2014 and the 2016 Olympic Games in Spanish-speaking Latin America. The deal marks the second time in South America, and first in Central America and Mexico, that ESPN will televise the Olympic Games to Spanish-speaking fans. The agreement includes non-exclusive pay TV and digital rights to Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. ESPN will televise the Olympic Games across multiple television networks and on ESPN Play, its live multiscreen broadband service. It will also air highlights online at {espn.com}. ESPN will initiate its coverage of Sochi 2014 on February 7 with the Opening Ceremony at 11am Eastern Time. It will air seven hours of live coverage daily beginning at 7am ET, along with best-of coverage each afternoon and a nightly highlights program. “Our main objective for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and the Summer Olympic Games in Brazil is to innovate and widen the options so that more people can enjoy the Olympics, which today, thanks to technology, are possible to follow on television as well as on cell phones, as today’s agreement with ESPN announces,” said Arturo Elias, managing director, UNO Noticias. “This agreement offers us with a tremendous opportunity to serve sports fans in Latin America. The Olympic Games are at the pinnacle of all sporting events and I am pleased that ESPN can utilize and leverage its platforms to showcase an event of this magnitude to fans in the region,” said Tim Bunnell, senior vice president of Production, Programming, Marketing and Ad Sales, ESPN International.
