Report Highlights Generational Divides in PR Amidst AI Revolution, Hybrid Work, Media Shifts, and Political Polarization

The USC Center for Public Relations today announced the release of its highly anticipated 2025 Global Communication Report, titled Mind The Gap. This year’s report delves into the profound and unprecedented transformations reshaping the public relations industry, examining the impact of artificial intelligence, the rise of hybrid work models, the rapidly evolving media landscape, and increasing political polarization.

The comprehensive study, conducted in conjunction with Zeno Group and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), surveyed over 1,000 communication professionals spanning four generations – Generation Z, Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers. “Mind The Gap” uncovers significant generational differences in perceptions and approaches to these critical industry shifts.

Key findings from the 2025 Global Communication Report reveal notable disparities in attitudes toward:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Understanding and adoption rates of AI tools and their potential impact on PR roles vary significantly across generations.
  • Corporate Purpose: Different generations hold distinct views on the importance and implementation of corporate purpose in communication strategies.
  • The Workplace: Preferences for remote, hybrid, and in-office work environments, as well as expectations for workplace culture and flexibility, differ considerably.
  • The Future of Media: Perspectives on the credibility, consumption habits, and influence of traditional and emerging media platforms diverge among generations.

The 2025 Global Communication Report is a collaborative effort supported by leading industry organizations, including the Arthur W. Page Society, Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, ICCO (International Communications Consultancy Organisation), Institute for Public Relations, Italian Federation of Public Relations (FERPI), PRCA (Public Relations and Communications Association), PR Council, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and Worldcom Public Relations Group.

The report is designed to provide valuable insights for practitioners, academics, and students seeking to understand the evolving landscape of the global communication industry.
