Julian Zuazo was born in Madrid, studied and began his career as an advertising creative in the United States – while at the same time taking his first steps as a film director.Returning to Spain, he became creative director of various agencies like Tandem DDB Needham, Lintas and Slogan, until he was named partner of Tapsa/JR in Madrid, the agency where he won his greatest international acclaim.His passion for movies led him into shooting and directing many of the commercials he created, combining both professions in recent years and winning prestigious international prizes at such events as the Cannes Lions, Clio Awards, The New York Festival, FIAP and El Sol. Filming in quantity has been the key to his training as a director. “Let’s say that to be a director you have to be born that way. Since I was very young in the agency business, I started directing my own spots and I did both jobs whenever I could, but it was the time I enjoyed the most,” Zuazo said.The Spanish director considers himself a very happy person who loves creating entertainment and emotion through visuals and music, and that is the personal mark he leaves on every audiovisual project.For Zuazo, what’s hardest about working in such a wide-ranging industry is doing everything, from choosing a wardrobe to framing a shot: “The challenge is to get it right – it’s all very difficult but every step brings an immense reward. The most fun is to feel the ideas intensely in order to turn them into top-quality productions,” he said.The director also said he will never forget the shoots he did for Iberia in Cuba. “The way they film there is really rudimentary, but at the same time very handcrafted.
