Marcelo Burgos from Letca Films: Since I began as a creative I realized I wanted to be a director

Burgos: Lo que más disfruto como artista es el pro

The Argentinean director, Marcelo Burgos, has many artistic and creative features. He combines his passion for the camera and for narrating stories with sculpting, illustration and design. After studying arts, he began his career as an illustrator in Ogilvy Buenos Aires. Afterwards, he began working as an art director and creative director in different Argentinean and Spanish agencies, during this period he won more than 70 advertising prizes. Ogilvy, Y&R Buenos Aires, BDDP Madrid, Vega Olmos Ponce and Remo are just a few. Ten years ago he began working as a director in Madrid and since then he has been lucky to collaborate with the best creatives in different countries. He has won more than eight Lions in Cannes for his work as a filmmaker.”I guess that since I began working as a creative I realized I wanted to direct. I was lucky to have people like Pucho Mentasti, Lucho Bender or Edi Flehner allow me to sit at their sides while they worked” he commented. “Advertising is a great school”. Burgos stated that his work in advertising has always been enriched by his other artistic interests. “Composition notions are the same in painting and in film, what I learn as a sculptor I apply when working with a 3D equipment. They may seem like different things but it all revolves around the same thing”.The painter, the sculptor and the designer coexist easily and naturally with the director “For some time, maybe just due to formal and organizational reasons, I tried to keep things apart, until one day I realized that all the activities were one, that each thing you do feeds the others. Directing encompasses many elements from the other disciplines or, at least what I learn from doing the other activities” he explained. What he enjoys most as an artist is the creation process, once he finishes a commercial or a sculpture he feels there is no longer any pleasure. “A finished sculpture for me is a huge paperweight I don´t know what to do with. The same goes for films: what is interesting is making them, going through the experience of shooting, preparing, planning”. He confesses that he has always been interested in art and that after studying and looking at it he became paralyzed somehow. He couldn´t do anything without thinking “this looks like this or that”. A few years ago he stopped looking outside and currently feeds from his own experience and has assumed bad things as a path to achieve good ones. “If some influence sneaks in, I just welcome it. I don´t like to ´look for references´ when facing a piece, I´d rather let it float in my head and generally, something comes up” he said. The Argentinean director is represented by seven production companies worldwide. His work has been well received in such diverse countries as France, Germany, the USA and China. He mentioned that “the relationship I have generated with people in each production company is very important for me. Letca, Chromista, Garlic, Rebolución, Hero… each one is my home”. Until last year Burgos had not felt curious about making a feature film, he had always preferred advertising, but this year he began to work on ideas and scripts for his opera prima. In the future the Argentinean director would like to exhibit his sculptures and to shoot a film project.Production Company:Letca Films, USAContact: {Melina Acevedo;meli@letcafilms.com} T +1-305-860-3833
