REEL DE ORO

Juan Poclava from Whiskey Co: I am at a good moment in my career but we always want more

Poclava: Mi objetivo a mediano plazo es filmar mi

The first time Juan Poclava saw a movie camera he was 15 years old and he couldn’t believe his eyes. He took part as an extra in a commercial directed by Henry Meziat and, since then, the thought of spending his life filming seemed extraordinary. At 18 he entered the University of Buenos Aires and at the same time studied History of Art at the Museo de Bellas Artes. Ten years later he managed to assist Meziat in a shooting and has since then spent 19 years filming commercials and movies. The filmmaker worked as first direction assistant for great Argentinean directors and in 2004 he began to film his own commercials. Two years later he made his first feature film for the North American market, titled Behind the trees. His work has been acknowledged with national and international awards. In the last months he has worked with Gatorade, LAN (LATAM Airlines) and Heineken; he handles clients in different parts of the world and is writing the script of his second feature film. Currently he is part of the Whiskey team, with whom he has had a great relationship. “For a director it is very important to have the certainty that there is support and order backing everything you do and I feel that is what Whiskey has. It is a team that covers the entire region and works as such: as a team. They aren’t independent cells and I think that is what makes them unique and special. You can visualize the project in the place that better suits it and you always work with the same people” commented the Filmmaker.”I come from the world of cinema and it is my passion, which is why I should say that storytelling is what I do, but the truth is I try to keep my reel as varied as possible” he explained. “I enjoy a super technical shooting and also a loose and fresh one. I like to approach projects in different manners, but I like them to be challenging and motivating. I wouldn’t stand doing the same thing all the time.”Poclava feels his occupation is fantastic. “I am at a good moment in my career but we always want more. Better ideas and bigger projects. It´s my nature, I like competition and to better myself constantly. In the future, I see myself a bit more focused on cinema, but I´m not in a rush.”If he could have directed a film, he would choose Boogie Nights by Paul Thomas Anderson. Among the artists he most admires and who inspire him the most are Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, Bill Murray, Woody Allen, Banksy and Richard Avedon. His experience in the filming of Behind the trees is full of “fun and tragic anecdotes. Almost all the people in the film crew were personal friends with whom I had gone to school with and we were determined to do our best in a project that was very ambitious, but fun at the same time” said Poclava. It is about six FBI agents who embark on a mission through a forest full of mysteries and dangers, in pursuit of a strange cult that murders ruthlessly” he narrated. “We shot for 37 days almost non-stop, so we went through various moods, but at a distance you just remember the good things and it was a great opportunity for me, being so young. It´s one of those projects you never forget.”Poclava has a long list of clients he would like to work with in the future and even repeat brands he has already worked for, but lately he is attracted by sports commercials. “My medium term goal is to film my second movie. The script is never ready until you´re filming, but it is there waiting and I love it” he finished.
