Hernan Corera Cortez Brotheres DIRECTOR
The director, photographer and musician; Hernán Corera; was born in Buenos Aires in 1983. His career began in 2007, when he directed a series of videoclips for great Latin American artists. In this area, he has succeeded at the LatinGrammy’s and the Premio Gardel. His link with music has also reflected on the design of album covers and collaborations with the Rolling Stone magazine. As a musician, he was part of the project DIETRICH and is currently developing his music as GDMN. He recently joined Cortez Brothers for representation in the US Hispanic and general market.
How did you start directing?
My dream as a boy was to design video games, and throughout my childhood I developed a special sensitivity for image, stories and fantasy.
After studying computing engineer for a few years and not finding my place, I realized that I had to take another path, closer to video games. At that time, for me it was music, and videoclips from around 2000, therefore I decided to study Image and sound at the University of Buenos Aires. In those years I developed an attraction and a profound love of photography and movies.
How would you define your visual style?
I think my visual style has great leverage in my inner universe. I try to synchronize each work I do with a personal interest I have at the moment I am going through. I am working on this, I try not to pay too much attention to what is going on in terms of trends, because I feel that limits you very much and draws you away from your inner voice. However, I spend a great part of my week doing research on the Internet and in libraries. I am very obsessive and at the same time very intuitive. I believe in the power of honesty, and that somehow reflects in my visual style.
How does the videoclips maker co-exist with the photographer and the commercial filmmaker?
They co-exist in a relation with lots of tension, but in the end, in a subtle balance. I am very grateful for my work as a commercial filmmaker, because it has led me to meet lots of people and has polished me deeply in my role as a director. I have gained many flight hours and practiced lots of emergency landings.
Somehow, being in charge of advertising projects exercises your humbleness to understand you are not the center of the world nor have the last word, and that you are part of a teamwork.
At the same time, I think we all have a purpose in life, that has to do with giving. Having artistic projects is what gives me self-restraint and leads me to this idea of giving something to the world. That is why I try to balance all this advertising process with my own works.
Why did you join Cortez Brothers?
I saw something profoundly human, call it intuition, but for me the human environment is the most important thing, you can’t possibly reach your full potential on your own. Even the most talented person in the world needs someone to transform his spark into a sacred fire. It is necessary at some point, to join, conjugate, create greater chords, and for this it is necessary for another person to vibrates in harmony with us, the human factor.
Where is Hernán Corera heading?
Towards the unknown. I think we have a greater plan, my wish is to never lose that map drawn on the stars.
