Canal Once celebrated its 55th anniversary with a reception at the channel’s facilities in Mexico City. In her welcome speech, channel director Enriqueta Cabrera said this year would bring important changes for public television, which would allow them to compete directly with pay-TV channels.“2014 will become a milestone in the surge of public TV channels in Mexico, with greater opportunities and a leveled playing field with pay-TV,” said Cabrera, adding that the telecommunications reform would facilitate these goals because “it opens a new horizon and represents an important change in this area. Secondary laws are about to take effect and they will obviously have a large impact.”For Yoloxóchitl Bustamante Díez, general director of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), “as Mexicans it makes us proud to have such world class television, rivaling any country in the world; and we’re even prouder of our institution, because we’ve brought together brilliant minds who have ideated around this technology to create the wonderful things Canal Once has done, is doing and will continue to do.”Channel executives, producers, directors, hosts and actors were in attendance at the event. From its beginnings, Canal Once enjoyed creative freedom and was inclusive of all audiences, setting it apart from commercial television.
