Digital entertainment at Univision has had a big challenge in these last two years, since Sameer Deen, Senior VP at Univision Digital, established a new path, to disengage from traditional TV content.
“We wanted to innovate in a storytelling bet that was different, but that covered both TV and tentpole contents, as well as the music events we have, and things like telenovelas, series, shows like El Gordo y La Flaca and Despierta América, which are key pieces in Univision´s entertainment offer. Under Deen´s leadership, we have innovated in the relations between digital and TV,” explains Hilda García, Digital Entertainment VP at Univision.
García said they started to make original contents related to telenovelas, series like El Chapo, a very important project that came out on FB Live with El Chapo Ilimitado. “Today, new audiences are more demanding. Not only must we offer new storytelling, we are trying to drift away from clichés, which is what people are demanding,” she expressed.
She commented that in the music area, they have managed to approach a different audience.
Other areas in which they have developed original content are humor, news, and cinema. “The digital audience is very interested in film. We have Pop Corner that has been very successful with our youngest audience, and a newscast titled Qué Crees, which has worked out fine,” she mentioned.
