Sandino Saravia Vinay from Cimarrón: “We’re Finishing Our First Reality Show El Conquistador For Televisaunivision”

Sandino Saravia Vinay from Cimarrón: “It’s also our first entertainment format, since we’ve mostly focused on scripted content, and it was definitely a challenge"

Cimarrón has been officially established in Mexico since 2021, with offices in Mexico City. They also have a presence in Montevideo and Buenos Aires, said Sandino Saravia Vinay, executive producer and partner at Cimarrón. “In Mexico, we’re working on several very important projects, one of the highlights being the reality show El Conquistador for TelevisaUnivision.”

EL CONQUISTADOR

The Uruguayan producer explained that they’re already in the final stages of El Conquistador, a reality show currently in post-production. “We’re almost done. The production was done together with The Mediapro Studios, who own the format.”

“This survival reality show has been airing for 20 years on Basque Television. In 2023, it was also produced for Spanish Television, and this is the first time it will be done for TelevisaUnivision,” said Sandino Saravia Vinay.

“It’s also our first entertainment format, since we’ve mostly focused on scripted content, and it was definitely a challenge. Everything was filmed in an archipelago of islands in the Dominican Republic, using boats and a crew of over 250 people. The conditions were extremely tough, both for the participants and the crew. A real experience,” he added.

Regarding the challenges of adapting the format to Mexico and the U.S. Hispanic market, the executive noted that it’s always complicated to adapt for other countries and screens, because audiences don’t always look for the same things. “Plus, it’s a reality show that will air in two countries with inherently different audiences and tastes. Casting participants who would connect with the Mexican audience was complex—I hope this will be the first season of many.”

El Conquistador is a reality show where 36 participants compete in challenges, divided into three teams of 12. Winners of each challenge get to sleep and eat in comfortable conditions, while losers must sleep in the jungle and find their own food. In the end, only one winner remains, earning a prize of US$200,000.

COMETIERRA

Cimarrón’s second project in Mexico is titled Cometierra. It’s a series produced in 2023, based on the novel by Argentine author Dolores Reyes. The adaptation was developed by showrunner Daniel Burman and will premiere on Prime Video “very soon,” according to Sandino Saravia Vinay.

“This series was filmed between Mexico and Uruguay and will premiere on Prime Video in 2025. It’s an Argentine novel adapted to Mexican realities. It tells the story of a teenager who lives alone with her brother after their mother’s disappearance. When she eats soil from places where people have disappeared, she’s able to connect with them,” he explained.

According to Prime Video, the lead role is played by actress Lilith Curiel, and the cast includes Yalitza Aparicio and Harold Torres.

OTHER PROJECTS

Regarding other productions and projects by Cimarrón in Mexico, Saravia Vinay said: “We’re currently filming the second movie by director Rodrigo Ruiz Patterson. It’s called La Hija del General (The General’s Daughter), and it’s being shot in Puebla.”

The production company expects it to air in 2026.

The executive also revealed they are developing two feature films for Mexico with a couple of Mexican writers and a couple of Chilean writers. “I can’t reveal much yet. We hope to start production next year and will be able to share more news then,” he concluded.
