Although Telemundo closed a great year with the World Cup and has opened 2023 with the success of El Señor de los Cielos, adverse macroeconomic issues, a drop in advertising revenue and the need to reallocate resources that reflect the change in media consumption to concentrate them in areas such as streaming, would be the reasons triggering layoffs by NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises throughout all its departments.

According to Media Moves, among the reported layoffs of approximately 60 to 70 employees would be Alina Falcón, SVP of Programming Planning and Scheduling at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and talent like Freddy Lomeli from En Casa con Telemundo.

Jeffrey S. Shell, CEO of NBCUniversal, recently stated at a UBS Global conference that these new changes are more about reallocation of investment, as opposed to the great structuring they did in 2020 to consolidate all parts of their TV business together, and thus cut costs. He said that if they are looking to invest more in streaming now, they need to cut costs, for instance, trying to keep on the sidelines the linear business as it declines. Costs are expected to be cut, probably more in programming than overhead. It will be an ongoing process as resources are reallocated, he said.
