La Tragedia de Chuy y Mauricio star cousins Martiniano, Nano, and Gabriel Berrelleza
Cinelatino will present the exclusive U.S. premiere of La Tragedia de Chuy y Mauricio (The Tragedy of Chuy and Mauricio), starring cousins Martiniano, Nano, and Gabriel Berrelleza, founders of the highly successful corrido-style musical group Los Cuates de Sinaloa. Popular corrido groups Los Reyes de Arranque and Grupo Ondeado also participate in the film. The movie was inspired by the story of Jesús Reyes González and Mauricio González García, two undocumented immigrants from El Chilar in Sinaloa, Mexico, who were assassinated August 8, 2003 in Paramount, California, after becoming involved in organized drug-related crime.The story of Chuy and Mauricio was recreated in the corrido song, Chrysler 300, by Los Canelos de Durango. The song did not gain fame until singer Jose Eulogio Hernández, known as El Potro de Sinaloa, began interpreting the song, which currently ranks among his most popular hits. With a solid 15-year career, Los Cuates de Sinaloa have distinguished themselves by composing songs about controversial figures in the drug war, and it was their 2008 interpretation of La Balada de Heisenberg for the television series Breaking Bad that opened their doors to international fame. The group also contributed to the soundtrack of Telemundos highly-successful series, La Reina del Sur.This film capitalizes on the cultural phenomenon and immense popularity of the corrido music genre, said James M.
