The Dominican documentary Isla de dos Repúblicas (60’), directed by Héctor Ulises Montás and co-produced by Mamut Films and Procinema, was supported by the tax incentive program granted by the Dominican Republic. The documentary provides a geographical, historical, and environmental view of the two nations that are within that Caribbean island share. “This type of project shows our commitment to education, that is our purpose,” said Montás.

The exploration of the territory for the project was carried out in December 2017, where they dedicated three days to the Dominican Republic and three to Haiti. “That expedition included four people: the writer, Frank Moya Pons; the director (Montás), the aerial cinematographer at the time, Leopoldo J. Tamargo, and the pilot,” explained Montás. During the aerial tour, they were able to record all the historical monuments, cities, natural resources, and the Dominican-Haitian border. It took four years from the start of production to the completion of the project. “There were several expeditions,” he said.

Isla de dos Repúblicas is currently being displayed in Dominican cinemas. “We want to present the documentary to both Latin American and US streaming platforms since it is available in Spanish and English. In Spanish, it was narrated by Fabián Toro from Torovoicer and in English by Mini Barker. In April I will be traveling to the US to introduce it to TV channels and platforms. The structure of the documentary has the qualification for its exhibition in any part of the world,” said Montás.

“In Isla de dos Repúblicas, under the direction of Héctor Montás, we created a voice character that narrates with the greatest clarity, but with the least possible prominence, so that the precision of the historical script, the surprising images, and the incidental music, have the leading role. The director had a lot of scrutiny in the use of the right emotions that should be used in each paragraph. It has been a privilege to be part of such a professional team,” said Toro of Torovoicer, who has narrated projects for Discovery, Cinemax, Golf Channel, INTI TV, among others.

Montás is already working on his next documentary project, América para los Americanos. “It is a feature-length documentary. It is a short story about the intervention of the United States in the Caribbean, it will introduce the viewer to the most significant themes and topics about the political decision of the US to send troops to the Caribbean zone in 1898 and 1916”, he concluded.
