Panel The new role of national broadcast TV

The New Role of National Broadcast TV in a FAST World) was the center of the discussion of the panel made up of Sam Matheny, Executive VP and Chief Technology Officer at NAB; Tad Ro, Senior Product Management VP at Pluto TV; Natalia Rodriguez, Head of Programming for Linear and Streaming at Estrella Media and Adam Ware, Senior VP of Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Growth Networks Group, during Nextv Series USA.

Rodriguez from Estrella Media mentioned that FAST offers great opportunities to content providers. “It is an opportunity to diversify our portfolio. Since it is free, there are no complications for the audience. It offers a relaxing experience, global distribution, and the possibility of monetization, so different from what it used to be for us broadcasters”.

Matheny, EVP at the NAB, highlighted that broadcasters are responding to this new environment in several ways: responding to this new environment in several ways: offering streaming via the website or through an app, integrating TV everywhere in their traditional cable subscription; launching their own streaming services; the participation of their channels in platforms and services such as Roku and Amazon.

Matheny also highlighted that 50% of open TV in the US has already adopted the ATSC 3.0 standard that was approved four years ago.

“The new standard offers more capability. For a 6MGHz channel, it represents a 30% of increase in capability and better video compression. This allows better resolution, greater content diversity, the possibility of running distribution from broadcast, it enables advanced advertising and new types of programming with social sharing functions, access to VOD services” he explained.

Ware from Sinclaire Broadcasting also commented that the group of stations is migrating to the new standard also called NextGen TV. He recalled that ATSC is based on IP which will allow any broadcaster to do the same thing a streaming service does. “The opportunity in data is huge”.
