Carla González Vargas and Maximiliano Sanguine of Gato Grande/MGM: Our goal with the US project in Mexico is to change the conversation about how Latinos have been seen in the global media

Gato Grande/MGM is preparing a US production in Mexico. “A project in English, with a Mexican protagonist, so it captures the US mainstream and US Hispanic audiences, and also of Mexico and Latin America in a single project,” noted Carla González Vargas, CEO of the company. She said it is a unique exercise about which they will give details after they announce the platform on which it will be broadcast. “It’s a scheme we were looking to film, and recordings will begin in the summer of 2024.”

Maximiliano Sanguine, VP of Creative Development and Production, reported on their projects in Mexico for 2024. “We are with three simultaneous productions now. We just finished a production for a global platform with a 100% Mexican true crime product of a high-profile media case, and we are producing a series for another global platform in Mexico City, in addition to a film. 2024 looks good despite the industry’s contraction,” she said.

González Vargas noted that their goal with the US project in Mexico is to change the conversation about how Latinos have been seen in the global media. “Which is why we are always looking for stories from people who are very good at what they do and also come from Latin America.”

He explained that the strategy of unscripted formats and films has worked very well, in addition to the model of crossing between Mexico and the US, after noting that despite the industry’s contraction, opportunities still exist.
