The Mediapro Studio has many fiction projects underway. In terms of series premieres, this year they have the second season of Iosi, a repentant spy, which will premiere on October 27 on Prime Video; Romancero, a supernatural thriller and an original approach to the genre created by Tomás Peña, also for Prime Video starting on November 3; El Otro Lado, created by the El Terrat team, one of the Studio production companies for Movistar Plus+ in Spain; and the thriller Iron Hand, arriving soon to Netflix.

“Among the projects in production, we have the series Consuelo, a comedy created by our team in Colombia and set in Mexico in the 1950s, currently in production for ViX; new seasons of Cecilia will soon arrive Paramount+, and Las Bravas for HBO Max,” said Marta Ezpeleta, director of Distribution, International Offices and Co-productions at The Mediapro Studio.

Regarding films, in the middle of the year, the Studio filmed El 47, a movie to be released in cinemas, directed by Marcel Barrena (Mediterraneo) and starring Eduard Fernández (Mediterranean, El hombre de las Mil Caras). It features a story based on an event that took place in Barcelona in the 1970s.

For Ezpeleta, the industry is going through a change process; models and trends evolve very fast. “In this context, platforms are exploring sharing models, but there is no recipe suitable for everyone; different options coexist, depending on the companies and the peculiarities of each title.”

More than a decrease in investment in fiction, she considers that an adjustment is taking place. “We have had a few years in which the volume of productions skyrocketed. We have experienced a real boom in fiction productions, which also had to do with the special circumstances created by the pandemic and the need to generate and supply a lot of content. Now, the situation has changed. The market itself is adjusting in a more suited way to the current circumstances,” she indicated.

Regarding production costs, she said that in the case of The Mediapro Studio, they cannot talk about percentages generally because each production has its own needs, which depend on many variables – territory, location, genre, or the type of story. “There is not a unique model. We are most flexible and what is necessary to adapt to the demand of each client.”

She added that The Mediapro Studio productions have high-quality standards in all their works and any territory. “It is one of our hallmarks and one of the reasons why we are a highly appreciated partner in the industry worldwide. Plus, our commitment to talent, with a pool of creators – showrunners, scriptwriters, directors – who work exclusively for the Studio, such as Ran Tellem, Daniel Burman, Fernando González Molina, Marc Vigil, Iván Escobar, Clara Roquet, Coral Cruz, etc., and figures who are frequent collaborators such as Fernando León de Aranoa. In addition, we have large international production teams made up of great professionals, and very active producing in Europe, Latin America, and the US, an expansion strategy possible thanks precisely to the solvency and effectiveness of our productions.”

Regarding film projects soon to be released in cinemas and afterward on platforms, Ezpeleta mentioned El Buen Patron and Competencia Oficial, released in movie theaters worldwide during the 2021–2022 season and now available on platforms. “It is the same model we followed with El 47, our new title now in the post-production phase, and other projects we hope to announce very soon.”

The Mediapro Studio is also producing feature films for platforms, such as Hunting Ava Bravo, an action thriller directed by Gary Auberbach and starring Kate del Castillo, which premiered on Prime Video or Give me Your Eyes, another genre proposal under the direction of Auerbach, which will premiere soon.
