New York Times Now eliminates subscription to approach millennials

Manuela Walfenzao| 16 de abril de 2015

La aplicación New York Times Now será gratis a partir del 11 de mayo

The New York Times application for smartphones, NYT Now, is deepening its commitment to attract young readers by eliminating subscriptions. The application will be free on the cloud starting May 11th.The company realized that subscriptions are less attractive to younger readers. The new version of the application will include less stories, shorter news, the option of receiving informative sms and a friendlier diagramming for mobiles. Thus, the information may compete with formats like Snapchat’s, with small pieces of content, and will adapt to users who read from their tablets or smartphones. Another function it will offer is to mark articles for later reading.”I think this change will resonate in the younger demographic groups”, said Erick Burckart, general director of Technology in PointSource. “85% of millennials have a smartphone and trust their mobile as a source of primary information”.The New York Times is developing one-sentence stories for users of Apple’s Smartwatch. The Times isn’t the only one concerned about making information for young users, aiming at the possibility of turning them into future subscribers. The Economist allied with Samsung to include their newspaper application in all the new devices. Other media such as CNN, ESPN, National Geographic, and Daily Mail have partnered with Snapchat to show short stories and news videos. The alliance between media and technology developers is a strategic play to deliver information.
