Roberto Sneider from La Banda Films: You’re Killing Me Susana Depicts Real Characters and Explores Their Contradictions

Roberto Sneider, President and Director of La Banda Films, launched his film You’re Killing Me Susana, Friday, February 17th in the U.S. He comments that filming is always an aesthetic act, a process that seeks to maintain balance with the narrative story.The main element of the film – based on the book Ciudades Desiertas by José Agustín and the central characters of Gael García Bernal and Verónica Echegui – is the humor.“Eligio, acted by Gael García Bernal, is a traditional Mexican written with absolute honesty. I felt as it was completely real and it is inevitable to be identified with him. This character is also full of vitality, the reason that attracted to me in the making of the film.”Although the film highlights some chauvinistic aspects of the character, Sneider mentioned that the plot depicts what real couples’ relationships are like. “Eligio is deeply in love and travels across the whole USA following his woman. Deep down, all he wants is his woman to tell him she loves him and nothing could be less chauvinistic. They aren’t simple characters and that is what makes it attractive. People are like that, full of contradictions.”To maintain the interest and the clarity of the plot there are some challenges a Director has to consider when shooting. “Many times we try to identify with the viewer and wonder who you are talking to. What I wanted was a film that I liked, and I hope the audience identifies with these characters.”
