Discovery announced that acclaimed Mexican actor, producer and director Gael García Bernal, winner of two Golden Globes, will narrate the series Blue Planet II, premiering in Latin America on Discovery on April 22 to coincide with Earth Day. In Argentina, the premiere is scheduled for 7pm, in Mexico at 8pm and Colombia at 9pm.

“Having Gael narrate this majestic production is the best way to amplify its message. Blue Planet II is an urgent call to raise awareness of what’s happening in the world’s oceans and the importance of protecting this resource for future generations,” remarked Carolina Lightcap, EVP and Chief Content Officer at Discovery Latin America/US Hispanic.

García Bernal was the spokesman for the United Nations Environment Programme’s Wild for Life campaign against the illegal trade in wild animals and has been active in other environmental causes. He produced and starred in El Ardor, a movie about humans’ ecological footprint on delicate ecosystems, and, in a previous collaboration with Discovery, he provided the Spanish-language narration for Human Planet, a series that explores the relationship between people and nature.

Blue Planet II takes viewers on a magical voyage of discovery to Planet Earth’s largest but least-known ecosystem: our oceans. By using breakthroughs in marine science and cutting-edge technology to explore this final frontier, the series reveals astonishing characters, otherworldly places, and extraordinary new animal behaviors, with warm and compelling stories about marine habitats and their colorful inhabitants.

Blue Planet II’s seven 60-minute episodes are a production of the BBC Natural History Unit and are co-produced with BBC America, WDR and France Télévisions in association with The Open University.
