Comcast: We cannot look back, only forward

Maribel Ramos-Weiner| 5 de mayo de 2015

In the framework of the general session of the first day of INTX: The Internet & TV expo in Chicago, Brian Roberts, CEO and Chairman of Comcast Corporation, announced the launching of the remote control activated via voice. Roberts said that the company does not cease to make new investments and, in spite of the failed purchase of Time Warner Cable, they continue to forge ahead with other ventures. He added that for the voice activated remote control, several partners have joined, such as Lutron (lighting), Net (thermostats), and August locks (security), since with the new function, users can control aspects such as lighting, security and temperature of their homes. He also revealed a group of modular routers that will be distributed at the end of 2016.Michael Powell, president and CEO of NCTA, participated in a conversation with Kara Swisher, executive co-director of Re/Code, where he expressed that the term “cable” must be eliminated, since it does not accurately reflect everything that is done in this industry. “It should be centered on the relation that this industry has with the Internet”, he pointed out. He emphasized that one of the things the Internet has done is raise the speed of innovation.During the discussion panel, in which Roberts, Peter Chernin from The Cherning Group and the moderator Michael Kassan from MediaLink took part, the Comcast executive indicated that the term Over The Top does not appeal to him. “I don’t love the phrase Over The Top. It is not going over anything but through a great broadband”.Chernin stated that what the OTT world reveals is a tremendous expansion of distribution. “I don’t see the collapse of the ‘bundle’, but new alternatives. OTT will force the ‘bundle’ to justify itself”.
