The second season of Como Agua para Chocolate will begin production in the first quarter of 2025. This season aims to tell the second part of Laura Esquivel’s novel while delving deeper into the storylines that resonated with audiences. In this season, the characters are more mature, and the relationships between them involve greater drama and complexity.
Jerry Rodríguez, showrunner and executive producer of Como Agua para Chocolate and SVP Head of Scripted at Endemol Shine Boomdog, told PRODU that staying true to the essence and key elements of the novel was crucial. Since the novel is short and was envisioned for 12 episodes, it required incorporating or expanding on certain plots and characters. “The revolutionary storyline was explored in greater depth than in the film, where it served more as a backdrop. We always aimed for balance because overshadowing the love story, the kitchen, or the magical realism—the core elements—would mean we were no longer telling the story of Como Agua para Chocolate,” explained Rodríguez.
Rodríguez revealed that new characters and locations will be introduced, though the primary setting remains the Las Palomas estate, the family home of La Garza. “We are meticulous in our search for locations to ensure they are faithful to what is written. In the end, these locations become characters in the story,” said the executive, commenting on the production preparations scheduled to begin between January and April 2025.
“The casting was one of the standout achievements of the first season, along with our work in reflecting the historical period. We paid close attention to detail and maintained realism, which is the only way to connect with a story that took place so long ago. I also believe the adaptation work was excellent. We managed to retell this story with a 2024 vision. Furthermore, the musical score and selection of songs accompanying the narrative helped forge a deeper connection with younger audiences,” Rodríguez stated.
Rodríguez praised the technical and creative teams: “Starting with the dedication and passion of my scripted team at Endemol Shine Boomdog, the vision of Salma Hayek and Pepe Tamez from Ventana Rosa, Sharon Levy and Lisa Fahrenholt from Endemol Shine North America, the direction by Julián de Tavira and Analorena Perezríos, the art direction by Antonio Muñoz Hierro, costume design by Amanda Cárcamo, and cinematography by Ximena Amann. Ximena has an extraordinary eye, and we’re thrilled that most of these amazing talents will return for the second season,” Rodríguez emphasized.
The score by Dario Valderrama and the scripts by Francisco Javier Royo Fernández, María Jaén, and Jimena Gallardo remain key pillars of the series based on Laura Esquivel’s novel.
