Javiera Balmaceda, Head of International Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, explained that international infrastructure helps elevate production without sacrificing local essence
The leadership of Javiera Balmaceda, Head of International Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, positions Mexico as a strategic hub connecting local storytelling with audiences in Canada, Australia, and Latin America.
Under her direction, the company prioritizes cultural authenticity and Hollywood standards as key pillars to control intellectual property and lead the streaming market.
For Balmaceda, the competitiveness of a Latin American original lies in narrative voices that illuminate unexplored perspectives and in production quality that meets global expectations.
According to the executive, the impact of productions such as ¿Quién Lo Mató? and Mentiras, La Serie sets the direction for the platform and demonstrates the key elements needed for this type of content to gain global reach.
“A competitive Latin American original needs three things: cultural authenticity that resonates locally but addresses universal human themes; production quality that meets international standards; and narrative voices that shed light on unexplored angles.”
She highlighted that global audiences prioritize content with each country’s unique identity: “They seek authenticity over familiarity. Nadie Nos Va A Extrañar and La Caída proved that narrative depth transcends borders.”
Collaboration between regional talent and major studios is evolving toward more integrated models. Balmaceda explained that international infrastructure helps elevate production without sacrificing local essence.
In the film Venganza, the studio applied this methodology: “It wasn’t about replicating a formula, but about adapting it to our reality, our aesthetics, and our emotions.” For this project, Romanian action specialists were brought in. According to the executive, “This transfer of knowledge not only enhanced the film but also left new capabilities within the local team.”
She noted that Amazon uses Mexico as a strategic center to connect markets such as Canada and Australia. The company balances its investment between established franchises like LOL and new productions.
For 2026, the platform is preparing several high-profile releases: “This year, the new Mexican bets include La Oficina, produced by Gary Alazraki, creator of Club de Cuervos; El Juicio, starring Eugenio Derbez and Pedro Alonso; Venganza, with Omar Chaparro and Alejandro Speitzer; and Prefiero la Muerte, our Young Adult project featuring emerging young talent,” she said. Regionally, highlights include La Casa de los Espíritus and the continuation of Betty La Fea.
Regarding the platform’s advertising model, Balmaceda clarified that it expands access while leaving the creative process unchanged: “What changes is how the content is delivered to the user, not how it is created.”
Finally, she emphasized that Amazon MGM Studios’ vision is focused on long-term sustainability: “Our commitment to Mexico and Latin America goes beyond individual releases. It’s about building a sustainable creative ecosystem where local talent has access to world-class resources without sacrificing their artistic vision.”
