Luis Fernández, Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, firmly believes that traditional TV is about live and direct programming
Winning the future for Telemundo means investing in content and talent, which are fundamental to staying relevant and competitive, as Luis Fernández, Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, told PRODU.
“Winning the future is the fundamental goal for those of us working in TV—through hard work, changes, passion, creativity, and investment,” he stated.
Fernández firmly believes that traditional TV is about live and direct programming. “We have to create live content. Sports is one of the most important genres for everyone, including Telemundo. That’s why we want to produce a daily live sports program to meet our audience’s needs, along with a FAST sports channel to provide sports coverage. And a crucial event is the World Cup next year—we need to stay on top of everything happening: the teams, the fans, the players, everything,” he emphasized.
The executive clarified that he is not against reality shows but supports TV that serves all genres, “not just reality shows,” including sports, news, and scripted, and non-scripted content. “Al Rojo Vivo, for example, or En Casa con Telemundo—this is also Telemundo. It’s not just reality TV; it’s TV that accompanies our Spanish-speaking audience in the U.S. throughout the day.”
Another area where Fernández wants to expand resources is news. “This is Julio Vaqueiro’s moment—this is the time to tell things as they are, now more than ever, at Telemundo. We are in a different situation than in previous years, and the Latino community needs to stay informed. We will be where the news happens, invest more, and expand resources to stay closer to events, prioritizing our Latino audience.”
