The 3D animated kid’s series Messi and the Giants about Leo Messi, the documentary series and film Esa Ambición Desmedida, and the distribution of the film Patria y Vida are three of the projects that Sony Music Latin Iberia brought to Mipcom.

Sergi Reitg, director of Strategic Projects Latin Iberia Premium Content, and Fernando Cabral de Mello, VP of Strategic Partnerships and Development, both of Sony Music Latin Iberia, shared the details with PRODU. They pointed out that, in the case of Messi and the Giants (26×22′), it is the first time that Sony Music and Sony Pictures Television Kids have worked together on a project.

“Other companies, such as Sony Publishing for music, will also be involved. Sony will be using its muscle of covering many areas to unify them in a project like this. We are in talks with different platforms to see which is our global partner to begin production in 2024. The premiere will be at the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026, the year of the World Cup,” they said.

The unreleased film Patria y Vida, already completed, was directed by Beatriz Luengo and included several Sony artists, such as Yotuel Romero, member of the band Orishas, Gente de Zona, and others. They highlighted that the film’s title is the name of a song that became very popular in Cuba, written by Maykel Castillo, who is currently in prison in Cuba. “It is a story about human rights. The film has been nominated for the Latin Grammy Long Form (Seville 2023). Castillo is the only artist in the world who, having received two Grammys, is in prison for composing a song.”

The third project is the launch of international sales of the documentary series and film Esa Ambición Desmedida, about the last tour of the Spanish rapper singer C. Tangana. The film premiered in San Sebastián and next week debuts in more than 120 theaters in Spain. In January 2024, Movistar+ will launch it in Spain. “We are currently negotiating international sales and hope that for Content Americas, we can announce which platforms and cinemas in Latin America will be showing it,” they added.
