At the Cable Show’s Multicultural TV breakfast, sponsored every year by Multichannel News and B&C, one of the takeaways on the topic of distribution and content was that there is still a lot of work to be done in the multicultural area, but all pay-TV executives agreed things are going in the right direction. The panel, entitled Distributing Multicultural TV In A Multi-format Cable Environment, included Álex Alonso, VP of Marketing of mun2; Timothy Boell, SVP of Content Distribution and Marketing of Asia TV USA Ltd.; Tom Mohler, CEO of Olympusat Holdings; and Michelle Webb, executive director of Content and Acquisition Strategy and general manager / executive director of Programming of FiOS1 Local Channels.According to Alonso, the industry is reaching the point where consumers will dictate the rules of content distribution.Boell said that if we talk about a channel like ESPN, distribution is everywhere, but if we’re dealing with smaller channels, the rules of distribution vary.Alonso argued that good content is always essential, and when asked whether it’s possible for multicultural content to appeal to the entire U.S. audience, he said they’re close, but there is still some work to do.Mohler said that Olympusat is focusing on creating programming for U.S. Hispanics. Boell said Asia TV USA has 25 hours of content weekly, adding that original content is key.
