La Dama de Cao is considered the first female leader historically known from the ancient Peruvian civilization

On Thursday Sept. 27 at 8pm, Nat Geo Mundo took viewers through a journey exploring Peru 1600 years ago when the female ruler Dama de Cao presided over the country. In the television special La Dama de Cao: El Misterio de la Momia Tatuada presents interviews and re-enactments from the discovery of Dama de Cao’s tomb, which was found with 220 pounds of funeral bundle, and unwrapped layer by layer. The pyramid where she was found was complete with five tombs, plus murals and drawings of fish, life, water, lunar animals and other Moche symbols.Momia Tatuada died at the age of 25 and is considered the first female leader historically known from the ancient Peruvian civilization. As a woman playing an important role in politics, culture and religion, she revolutionized how the international archeological community viewed pre-Columbian societies.
