Andrés Henao: Working for the Hispanic market has given me all I have and all I am in this country

Henao: Disfruto todo de la fotografía, desde enten

Andrés Henao is a Colombian visual artist and advertiser, born in Medellín. He began his career in 1998 as an art director for important advertising agencies such as Y&R, J. Walter Thompson and JU&A (TBWA). Since 2006 he lives in Miami, where he was art director for six years in the Hispanic agency Accentmarketing and handled big accounts like: U.S. Navy, General Motors, Dunking Donuts, among others. His job as an advertiser was acknowledged with awards like the Addy, Caribe and Ojo de Iberoamérica. In 2009 the magazine Lürzer’s ARCHIVE included him in their publication 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide.

Throughout his entire career, photography was always an important part, but it is not until 2010 when he makes the decision to fully devote himself to this discipline. He is currently one of the most coveted advertising photographers in the Hispanic market in the US. His clients include U.S. Navy, HBO, Black & Decker, Latin Works, La Comunidad, Nickelodeon, Terra Networks and Dunkin Donuts. “Working for the Hispanic market has given me all I have and all I am in this country and I am constantly grateful for that.”

Henao pointed out that his experience as art director is something he uses in each picture he takes. “Art direction was precisely what led me to the universe of photography, it helped me understand it deeply and fall in love with it” he added.

“I enjoy everything about photography: from the understanding of light all the way to seeing the picture published. All that process excites me and fills me with adrenaline” he confessed. “Each challenge I take on when I am assigned a project allows me to set my mind on the task of solving the riddle. Each project is different and that diversity leads me to experiment with many things and analyze others.”

His portfolio has artistic and commercial pieces, which, according to the photographer, coexist in perfect harmony. “They have learned to get along well, sometimes they fight but that is normal in every couple. Commercial photography demands more challenges, since it means representing someone else´s vision. Personal projects stem from oneself, one is in control. It is what you want to express and that is what makes them different. One type forces you out of your comfort zone and the other brings out what you have inside” he explained.

Henao has trouble defining himself as an artist, since he feels his quest is precisely to be himself. “I think every artist is seeking an identity and that is evolution, a learning process in the accumulation of experiences” he said.

Henao has a list of important people he would like to take pictures of, including some presidents, some artists, some people who work to help people, animals and the planet. If he could travel in time to meet some important photographer in history, he would choose Richard Avedon. “Somehow, his pictures inspire me, I identify very much with his work and might like my portrait work to head in that direction” he said.

For 2016, he hopes to continue growing, continue learning and continue enjoying throughout the process. “There are a lot of projects but all are intangible for now. I prefer to allow things to come and surprise me” he ended.
