Hispanic industry continues to evolve and one of the more favorable aspects has been the way it is closing the gender gap. As part of Women’s History Month, Karla Acevedo, EVP/chief stewardship officer of Casanova//McCann, spoke of the need to be more open to an inclusive dialogue and the development of concrete projects that generate real changes for coming generations. “Though many opportunities for improvement still exist, I love seeing that there’s more gender equality all the time. I love being able to work with successful women in leadership positions and seeing more and more organizations directed by successful women who have managed to get ahead in the most intelligent way. For me it’s a source of pride to be part of an agency that represents all that in many ways, by creating a structure that ensures a gender balance, and creating opportunities with inclusion, diversity and equity always present,” Acevedo said. She says it is unfortunately undeniable that in 2023, gender often continues to be a determining factor in certain cases. “I think that in the balance of things, for me it has all been for the best – gender is something that motivates me and that I enjoy as an intrinsic part of who I am. Personally, I have tried to avoid making it a cause or central purpose of my career. Nonetheless, as time passes you realize that gender will play a role and you learn to make use of it and/or overcome it as necessary.” Though there are many ways to succeed in the industry, some barriers for female creatives still exist. “I may believe in you and have faith in your talent independently of whether anyone else recognizes it or applauds you for it,” Acevedo added. “But don’t wait for things ‘to happen,’ just take a firm step forward. In addition I would say work hard with commitment, dedication and above all with love at all times for what you’re doing. That’s something I truly believe to be independent of gender, but it’s important because talent without effort rarely gets you very far.”Passion is the key word this year for Acevedo. “For me it has been and always will be what marks the difference in what you do, how you do it and why you do it.”
