“I could start off talking about my travels, photography, cooking for my friends, but it’s very hard to talk about another activity that moves me with as much passion as films” says director Joao Nuno Pinto. Directing for him is the chance to live different lives and experience new realities all at once. The first step in his career of self-expression was at the Portuguese agency Abrinicio as an art director, soon rising to the post of creative director.He directed commercials in Lisbon for such clients as Optimus, Galp, Vodafone and Yellow Pages, and won prizes at the London International Advertising and Design Awards and the Ojo de Iberoamerica. Once he passed his mark of 100 spots filmed between Portugal and Brazil in 2010, he directed his first fiction feature film America, coproduced by Brazil, Spain and Portugal.Nuno doesn’t hide his immense passion for movies and directing, and says that “schools are very important for learning everything about moviemaking, but you don’t come out of a school as a director if you’re not dying to express yourself artistically or as a storyteller. That happened to me”. What marks the difference between a good director and a competent technician is the need for visual expression and creation that every director should have. Nuno studied Graphic Arts and had a professional career as an art director, but felt limited by the tools at his disposal. He saw there could be no better way to express himself than cinema, and subsequently studied for his new profession at the New York Film Academy.According to Nuno, it is essential that new directors be authentic and that they “find their own voice and their own language, that they seek to be unique, visionary, persevering. That they have no fear of hard times, of innovating, of taking risks. And above all, that they enjoy it, since they have the luck to be working in the best profession in the world – but may they never be arrogant.
